Medicare is our country’s federal health insurance program for people 65 & older and younger people with disabilities, including those with end-stage renal disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
Know Your Options
Original Medicare only pays a portion of your health care costs. Medicare Supplement Insurance, or Medigap is extra insurance you can buy from a private health insurance company to help pay your share of out-of-pocket costs in Original Medicare, like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. Original Medicare does not include prescription drug coverage or routine dental, vision, and hearing.
Medicare Advantage or Part C is a type of health plan in the United States offered by private companies, which was established by the Balanced Budget Act of 1997. This created a private company alternative to Original Medicare. Medicare Advantage plans are bundled plans that include Part A, Part B, and usually Part D. These plans may also include routine dental, vision, hearing, and some extra benefits.

The enrollment period annually is from October 15th to December 7th to make changes for the following year. New to Medicare: 7-month period to enroll. Special Enrollment for life events is limited (call to see if you qualify).
Medicare Options
Original Medicare
Original Medicare includes Medicare Part A (Hospital), which covers inpatient hospital stays, care in a skilled nursing facility, hospice care, and some home health care. Part B (Medical Insurance) covers certain doctors’ services, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services. You can join a separate Medicare drug plan to get Medicare prescription coverage (Part D).
You can also shop for and buy supplemental coverage that helps pay your out-of-pocket costs (like your 20% coinsurance). You can use any doctor or hospital that takes Medicare, anywhere in the U.S.
Medicare Advantage
Medicare Advantage (also known as Part C) is a Medicare-approved Plan from a private company that offers an alternative to Original Medicare for your health and drug coverage. These “bundled” plans include Part A, Part B, and usually Part D.
Coverage that helps pay your out-of-pocket costs. In many cases, you can only use doctors who are in the plan’s network. Plans often have different out-of-pocket costs than Original Medicare or supplemental coverage like Medigap.
